Changing intra‐ and interspecific interactions across sedimentary and environmental stress gradients

چکیده

Intensifying land use and accelerated erosion has resulted in increased delivery deposition of fine terrestrially derived sediment to coastal ecosystems, increasing mud content estuarine ecosystems. This change the sedimentary environment is known have negative consequences for ecosystem functioning. Yet indirect cyclical relationships between species are rarely investigated, despite being crucial understanding resilience. We investigate changes intra- inter-specific interactions two key intertidal (Austrovenus stutchburyi Macomona liliana) with different but overlapping environmental preferences. a large dataset spanning 29 estuaries 0%–87% predict effects increases mud. observed important feedback loops Austrovenus recent recruits, older individuals, shell content, chlorophyll stress (mud). These show characteristics high low ecosystems not apparent moderate Increases number paths weaker/more variable also occurred. Thus, our (12%–25%) model may be encompassing transition point dynamics where interaction networks break down shift an alternate state.

Tritrophic Interactions Across Biotic and Abiotic Gradients

Responses to previous reviews This LTREB proposal was submitted in January, 2008 and was not funded. The reviewer and panel comments were very helpful in drafting a revision and in contemplating the long-term research goals of the PI. All reviewer comments prompted changes in this proposal; the most notable concerns and criticisms (italicized and shortened) from the panel summary are directly a...

Amphibian species richness across environmental gradients

Large-scale field patterns are a fundamental source of inferences on processes responsible for variation in species richness among habitats. We examined species richness of larval amphibian communities in 37 ponds over seven years on the Univ. of Michigan’s E. S. George Reserve. Ordination of the community incidence matrix indicated a strong major axis of variation in species associations that ...

Structure of trophic and mutualistic networks across broad environmental gradients

This study aims to understand how inherent ecological network structures of nestedness and modularity vary over large geographic scales with implications for community stability. Bipartite networks from previous research from 68 locations globally were analyzed. Using a meta-analysis approach, we examine relationships between the structure of 22 trophic and 46 mutualistic bipartite networks in ...

Hierarchical analysis of species distributions and abundance across environmental gradients.

Abiotic and biotic processes operate at multiple spatial and temporal scales to shape many ecological processes, including species distributions and demography. Current debate about the relative roles of niche-based and stochastic processes in shaping species distributions and community composition reflects, in part, the challenge of understanding how these processes interact across scales. Tra...

Canopy interactions and physical stress gradients in subtidal communities.

Species interactions are integral drivers of community structure and can change from competitive to facilitative with increasing environmental stress. In subtidal marine ecosystems, however, interactions along physical stress gradients have seldom been tested. We observed seaweed canopy interactions across depth and latitudinal gradients to test whether light and temperature stress structured i...
